Several things can delay your foreclosure. 

1.  Incorrect information in your foreclosure notice may do it

2.  Lawsuits where a judge orders the foreclosure to be delayed until the case is settled

3.  Bankruptcy -  Bankruptcy has an automatic stay on all civil cases.  This delays your foreclosure and is sometime the best option.
